Sunflower Gardens

Salinas, CA

Project Type

Sunflower Gardens is an affordable, multi-family supportive housing community built to the highest green standards. This new four-building complex in Salinas provides 18 affordable dwelling units with communal facilities and support services to 23 formerly homeless or at-risk adults through Interim Inc., a Monterey County nonprofit organization that provides quality housing for people with psychiatric disabilities.

Sunflower Gardens was the first in Monterey County to achieve Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes certification. The design includes the use of on-site renewable energy from an array of solar photovoltaic panels.

Intricate sunflower mosaic tiles created by clients are integrated into the buildings’ exterior. Through an Interim-funded arts program for homeless adults called Breakthrough H’art, and Dorothy’s Place, a local soup kitchen and homeless shelter, artists met weekly for a year to create the vibrant art pieces.
