611 Abbott Medical Office Building - Interiors
611 Abbott Medical Office Building
WRD Architects partnered with Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System to design a two-story medical office building complete with luxuriant landscaping throughout the site, including mature olive trees at the front entry and a rooftop garden accessible to all building users. The ground floor houses a physical therapy space, which includes an MRI unit and a therapy spa. The upper floor features nurse training and administrative areas, along with a state-of-the-art clinical simulation lab. The lab includes a control room, two simulation areas and debriefing rooms.
“Simulation has been used for many years in aviation, the military and in medicine,” said Rachel Failano, RN, MSN, Clinical Nurse Educator, Clinical Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator, “but it is new territory for nursing, and in a non-teaching hospital setting in particular. It adds an entirely new dimension to learning. We can create specific patient care environments and scenarios using high-fidelity, human simulators, rather than patients, to learn the most effective and safest ways to respond in situations.”
Outside the medical facility, Bio Swales, treatment systems, sediment filters, and grease interceptors were designed to treat and control stormwater from parking lots.

Move Studios - Interiors
Move Studios
With the help of a visionary owner and the City of Monterey, the dilapidated historic Union Ice facility at 600 East Franklin Street was transformed into Move Studios, a state-of-the-art dance and movement center.
As designed by WRD Architects, the newly restored buildings feature high ceilings, abundant natural light, traditional basket-woven sprung floors, spacious reception areas, and six uniquely-designed studios to accommodate the diverse dance styles taught within the 8,000-square-foot space.
As both a building owner and a dancer who learned ballet while living in France, Monterey-born Kristin Minnich realized her dream of creating a vibrant dance studio to inspire teens and adults. Her direct involvement with flooring, finishes, lighting and audio selections resulted in a unique, high-performance space designed by a dancer for dancers.

Historic East-West Courthouse Renovation - Interiors
Historic East-West Courthouse Renovation
Described by retired Monterey County Project Manager Judy Jeska as the “Jewel of the County,” the East-West Building sits on a site that has served as the county seat of government for nearly 140 years. WRD Architects transformed the interior of this 1937 WPA-era courthouse into a new headquarters for the Monterey County District Attorney.
Special care was taken to preserve and restore the National Register–listed building. Original steel windows were replaced and repainted in their historic “Aegean Green.” At the rear of the building, a new skybridge connects the three-story West Wing to the two-story East Wing. The first floor features a law library and a café.
WRD provided full architectural services from project inception, including programming, needs assessment, development guidelines, and master planning.

Monterey County Health Department - Interiors
Monterey County Health Department
WRD Architects collaborated with Monterey County to design a new 47,000-square-foot Health Department headquarters. To minimize downtime and avoid the need for interim relocation, the new facility was constructed adjacent to the existing headquarters, which has since been demolished. During demolition, materials were recycled, and the existing asphalt was ground and repurposed as the base for new parking areas.
The new building consolidates four bureaus—Administration, Public Health, Behavioral Health, and Environmental Health—along with the Public Health Laboratory. The open office layout enhances communication, maximizes natural light, and allows flexibility to accommodate future growth and evolving program needs.
The multi-level design follows the site’s natural topography, reducing the building’s perceived mass and integrating seamlessly with the adjacent Natividad Medical Center campus.

WRD Architects worked with a visionary owner to create a contemporary space for the first specialty tea and coffee shop on Monterey’s Fishermans Wharf.
The client’s passion for tea inspired the design process. Four high performance digital tea steepers maintain the optimal temperature, pressure and timing for each variety of tea. Several varieties of raw, local honey are displayed in six giant dispensers behind the counter.
The cafe’s commitment to sustainable, organic practices is reflected in the design. The exposed ceiling features natural wood while the new balcony addition and glass doors leading to it provide a clear, uninhibited view of the Monterey Bay. A mural near the balcony connects the Bay’s fishing industry with the owner’s own extended family.

Scales - Interiors
Scales
Scales showcases some of the Peninsula’s finest cuisine combined with the California Coast’s most impressive views. The 22,000-square foot restaurant includes high ceilings with large bay windows from top to bottom where more than 300 diners can experience the harbor’s natural ebbs and flows.
With the help of WRD Architects, the co-owners and brothers Chris and Sabu Shake Jr.’s vision came to life.
“When we bring people in and lead them to their table we want them to know that they are being seated in the best seat in the house—all of them are,” said Sabu Shake Jr. “We have laid it out so that everyone has a great table and a comfortable one.”
The contemporary space is unique to the Wharf, providing an elegant and urban feel that stands out from the Wharf’s many nautical-themed shops and restaurants.
“Our clean design maximized the incredible views throughout the space,” said WRD Architects’ Principal Henry Ruhnke.
The building houses four main operations that cater to a wide range of guests’ needs – a seafood and steak restaurant, café, fish market, and gift shop. Each space has a distinct visual identity, yet visitors can enjoy casual access to each operation. The crown jewel is the restaurant’s bar, which is designed to reflect the ocean’s rich range of blue and grey tones with long vertical scales illuminated by pendant lights above.

Monterey County Government Center - Interiors
Monterey County Government Center
In 2013, Capital One Financial Services abruptly vacated its former offices at Schilling Place in Salinas, leaving behind a sprawling corporate campus with over 200,000 square feet of interior space and a vast landscape of existing cubicles. Recognizing a rare opportunity to consolidate eighteen disparate departments under one roof, Monterey County enlisted WRD Architects to lead a comprehensive programming effort—one that demanded careful coordination of civic needs and logistical planning.
WRD Architects’ design transformed the existing one- and two-story financial services buildings into a vibrant, centralized campus for the County of Monterey. From concept to completion, WRD provided full project oversight, including programming, needs assessment, development guidelines, master planning, construction documents, bidding support, and construction administration, culminating in a fully furnished and operational government facility.

EMC Planning - Interiors
EMC Planning Group
Location
Monterey, CA
Project Type
Commercial
This former bank headquarters was originally built in the 1970’s and was inhabited by a travel agency until very recently. EMC Planning Group moved in after construction was completed in Spring of 2022.
A classic example of adaptive reuse, several original elements of the building have been preserved or repurposed. The main office space was modified to include private offices on either side, allowing the open floor plan in the center to remain. In addition, the kitchen was expanded to include space for more cabinets, a fridge, and a small seating area, and the old bank vault was transformed into a copy and filing room. The original wood vaulted ceiling and exposed beam work was left unchanged.
The use of multiple colors and textures create dimension throughout the whole space. Both floors feature gradient carpeting to add visual interest and make the interior feel larger. Each office includes an individually colored accent wall with matching, understated cushioned seats. The entryway boasts multicolored, abstract tile and a curved front desk with natural wood paneling and a contrasting privacy screen.
