Plumes Farm
Plumes Farm
On a few acres of land once part of an abandoned Chardonnay vineyard, WRD Principal Henry Ruhnke designed a 3,200-square-foot family home in Carmel Valley as an homage to the region’s historic farmhouse architecture.
While the farmhouse-style ranch draws from classic American traditions, the interiors evoke Provençal charm, featuring elegant proportions, authentic materials, handcrafted linens, and carefully curated, restored antiques—all bathed in warm natural light.

Natividad Acute Rehabilitation Center
Natividad Acute Rehabilitation Center
WRD Architects partnered with Natividad Medical Center to remodel its existing 21,000-square-foot Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU)—the largest of its kind in Monterey County. Located in Salinas, the ARU provides inpatient and outpatient services for individuals recovering from injuries or complex medical conditions that may cause disability. This OSHPD-1 remodel was driven by patients’ increasingly consumer-oriented approach to selecting rehabilitation facilities.
The renovation added four acute rehabilitation beds and four dialysis beds, increasing the ARU’s total capacity to 24. The project also introduced updated finishes, furnishings, equipment, and nurses’ stations throughout the unit. Additional improvements included a new outdoor garden, as well as refurbished gym and dining areas.
Construction was completed in carefully planned phases to minimize disruption to patients. Remarkably, not a single patient bed was left vacant due to the remodel. In terms of square footage, this project represents Natividad’s largest renovation since the hospital was built in 1999.

Dientes
Dientes
WRD Architects assisted Dientes, a nonprofit dental clinic, to expand its Santa Cruz facility by 2,400 square feet. The newly established Helen Webster Children’s Dental Center accommodates the needs of young patients with a seven-chair pediatric wing that includes kid-friendly waiting room areas and tooth brushing stations for teaching oral hygiene.
WRD Architects maximized clinical efficiencies by studying and incorporating staff workflow into the space plan. The naturally lit OSHPD-3 facility has a centrally located panoramic X-ray space and a sterilization room to serve both the adult and pediatric wings. As a result of this project, Dientes is now able to accommodate 8,800 additional visits a year — 40 percent more than the clinic’s original capacity.

611 Abbott Medical Office Building
611 Abbott Medical Office Building
WRD Architects partnered with Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System to design a two-story medical office building, complete with lush landscaping throughout the site—including mature olive trees at the front entry and a rooftop garden accessible to all building users. The ground floor houses a physical therapy suite, which includes an MRI unit and a therapy spa. The upper floor features nurse training and administrative areas, along with a state-of-the-art clinical simulation lab. This lab includes a control room, two simulation rooms, and debriefing areas.
“Simulation has been used for many years in aviation, the military, and in medicine,” said Rachel Failano, RN, MSN, Clinical Nurse Educator and Clinical Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator. “But it is new territory for nursing—especially in a non-teaching hospital setting. It adds an entirely new dimension to learning. We can recreate specific patient care environments and scenarios using high-fidelity human simulators instead of real patients, allowing us to practice the most effective and safest responses in a variety of situations.”
Outside the facility, bio swales, treatment systems, sediment filters, and grease interceptors were designed to manage and treat stormwater runoff from the parking areas.

Move Studios
Move Studios
With the help of a visionary owner and the City of Monterey, the once-dilapidated historic Union Ice facility at 600 East Franklin Street has been transformed into Move Studios, a state-of-the-art dance and movement center.
Designed by WRD Architects, the restored buildings feature high ceilings, abundant natural light, traditional basket-woven sprung floors, spacious reception areas, and six uniquely designed studios to accommodate the wide range of dance styles taught within the 8,000-square-foot space.
Monterey native Kristin Minnich, both building owner and lifelong dancer who studied ballet in France, realized her dream of creating a vibrant studio to inspire teens and adults alike. Her hands-on involvement in selecting flooring, finishes, lighting, and audio systems helped shape a high-performance space truly designed by a dancer, for dancers.
